Improvement and Project Benefits - Phase 1B, North McCarran Blvd to Golden Valley Road

Improvements and Project Benefits - Phase 2, Golden Valley Road to Stead Boulevard
- Widen U.S. 395 to three general-purpose lanes

- Install new traffic signal system at Golden Valley Road interchange to replace the existing temporary signal system.
- Widen Golden Valley interchange with two lanes to access southbound U.S. 395

Landscaping and Aesthetics - Phase 1B, North McCarran Blvd to Golden Valley Road
This project will include the construction of five new sound walls, retaining walls at the bridges and in the median, and aesthetic elements highlighting the gateway to the City of Reno. The sound walls range from eight to 18 feet in height. Sound walls are the used to mitigate traffic noise impacts to adjacent property owners and residents. The sound walls are generally constructed at the edge of the roadway to maximize noise reduction.
Sound walls provide a canvas for visually pleasing treatments. Sound wall and retaining wall aesthetic patterns are inspired by native Peavine Mountain Aspen trees. Two distinct patterns will be cast into the concrete. One pattern reflects the trunk and bark of the trees, and the other represents the leaves. The trunk pattern will be on both sides of the sound walls, while the leaf pattern will be on the retaining walls. All surfaces will be painted.
For the North Virginia Street gateway to the City of Reno, a large aesthetic element will be visible from both U.S. 395 as well as North Virginia Street. This 27-foot-tall piece will include five different colors and be constructed of concrete, steel, and polyacrylic panels, similar to the materials used at the Parr/Dandini Interchange. Subtle lighting will enhance the night view. The structure draws inspiration from early Reno architecture and the Reno arch.
Ground treatments include preservation of existing plant material, seeding, native plantings, rock, and boulders.

Landscape and Aesthetics - Phase 2, Golden Valley Road to Stead Boulevard
This project will include the construction of new sound walls, retaining walls, and aesthetic elements at Golden Valley and Lemmon Valley. Sound wall aesthetic patterns are inspired by native Peavine Mountain Aspen trees and are a continuation of the previous construction phase.
- At Golden Valley, two long curvilinear walls with be constructed. Large abstracted native flowers of Altered Andesite Buckwheat and Arrowleaf Balsamroot made from metal and polycarbonate will be installed on the walls. The Arrowleaf Balsamroot’s vibrant yellow flower is a probable namesake for Golden Valley and is also an important food for sheep, deer, and elk. Altered Andesite Buckwheat is a rare species that is endemic to the local highly-acidic altered andesite soils which few plants can survive in. Lupine plant leaves will be painted on the bridge girders and abstracted metal image panels of the flower will be installed on wing walls.
- At Lemmon Valley similar walls will be installed. Abstracted birds in flight fabricated from metal will be placed on posts along the top of both walls. The poles represent grasses and the design is inspired by the nearby Swan Lake Nature Study Area. To reinforce the flight and bird theme, feathers will be painted onto the bridge girders and image panels of feathers will be installed on wing walls.
- Ground treatments include preservation of existing plant material, seeding, native plantings, rock, and boulders.
A similar wall will also feature Altered Andesite Buckwheat.
At Golden Valley, two long curvilinear walls approximate 4’ tall with be constructed. Large abstracted native flowers of Altered Andesite Buckwheat and Arrowleaf Balsamroot made from metal and polycarbonate will be installed on the walls.
Similar walls will be installed at Lemmon Valley. Abstracted birds in flight fabricated from metal will be placed on posts along the top of both walls. The poles represent grasses and the design is inspired by the nearby Swan Lake Nature Study Area.
Sound Wall Locations
This project will include the construction of 5 sound walls. They range in height from 8 to 18. Sound walls are the most common tools used to mitigate noise close to projects impacting property owners and residents. Sound walls are generally constructed at the edge of the roadway to maximize noise reduction. The walls will be made of concrete post and panel or concrete masonry block.
