24/7 Northbound U.S. 395 Lane Reductions To Begin As Part of NDOT’s Highway Widening Project

CARSON CITY, Nev. – Beginning Sunday, Jan. 28, northbound U.S. 395 will be reduced to two lanes in the North Valleys through 2025 as part of a multi-year Nevada Department of Transportation project to widen and improve the highway.

Northbound U.S. 395 will be reduced to two lanes 24/7 from just north of Oddie Boulevard to Golden Valley Road beginning at 8 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 28 through mid-2025 as sections of highway and bridges are removed and reconstructed, retaining walls built and other improvements made.

The lane reductions are needed for worker and motorist safety as part of continuing multi-year highway improvements to widen and repave approximately four miles of U.S. 395 between North McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road. Drivers should plan ahead and leave extra travel time for the following traffic changes:

24/7 Lane Shifts and Speed Reductions
  • Highway lanes are slightly reduced in width and shifted.
  • Speeds are reduced to 55mph 24/7 through the work zone.
Lane and Ramp Closures
  • Additional overnight lane closures will take place, with highway lanes reduced to a minimum of one lane in each direction:
    • Northbound U.S. 395: lanes reduced between 8 p.m. and 11 a.m.
    • Southbound U.S. 395: lanes reduced between 7 p.m. and 5 a.m.
  • Intermittent ramp closures will take place between 9 p.m. and 5 a.m. Sunday evenings through Saturday mornings. Detour routes will be marked.
  • Virginia Street on-ramp to southbound U.S. 395 in Panther Valley is closed through late 2024.
  • Construction schedule is weather permitting and subject to change.
  • In coming months, NDOT advises drivers to anticipate additional major construction impacts, including extended closure of North Virginia Street access to northbound U.S. 395 for bridge construction.

With major construction scheduled to take place through the end of 2025, NDOT is encouraging drivers to sign up for the following traffic alerts:

  • Text “NorthValleys” to 866-540-8466 to sign up for construction text alerts.
  • Contact the project hotline at (775) 636-4202.
  • Visit 395NorthValleys.com for project information and updates.

The project will make the following improvements to enhance traffic mobility and safety on the heavily-traveled corridor:

  • Add additional lane to southbound U.S. 395 between north McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road. This new lane will be constructed in the median of the southbound freeway.
  • Construct additional merge (auxiliary) lanes between each freeway ramp in both directions of U.S. 395 between north McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road.
  • Construct a “braided” freeway ramp along northbound U.S. 395 between the Panther Valley on-ramp and Golden Valley Road for safer, smoother traffic flow, similar to southbound I-580 ramps at Mill and Second streets.
  • Repave both directions of U.S. 395 between north McCarran Boulevard and Golden Valley Road.
  • Construction of five new sound walls, retaining walls, and aesthetic elements highlighting the gateway to the City of Reno and roadside ground treatments such as native plantings and rock.
  • Add paved shoulders of up to 12 feet to provide room for enhanced incident management and roadside response.
